Thanks a lot, Heather! Experience tells me the likelihood that patch
will easily apply to older major versions is extremely small. That said,
I'm looking towards the future. Having this report "live" will help us

Of course making it Won't Fix will render this bug all but invisible,
though, and there are future release versions to consider. I don't want
to get into a status war especially given I'm not in the LibreOffice

status. Even
Flipped to Fix Committed from Fix Released for libreoffice in Ubuntu
since even Hirsute is still stuck on 7.0.4 and I'm not sure even +1 will
have 7.1.x, let alone 7.2.x.

I think you meant to link to the section about platform compatibility on Linux

I am pretty sure that's a non-issue in PCManFM-Qt.

I'm not entirely surprised at the read only thing (see
https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/3827/doc-files-open-as-read-
only/) though I'm a little surprised about the inconsistent behavior
that under some file managers that happens and under others, it doesn't.
That's not really relevant here,
So clearly the problem here is with Thunar and PCManFM-Qt, at least
something about how they handle the Samba connection that makes
LibreOffice (and only LibreOffice, apparently) unhappy.
So I have three thoughts:
1. Connect to the Samba share manually. This way we're not relying on
the logic
I wonder…
1. if you use pcmanfm-qt or thunar in any of the flavors, does it fail?
2. if you use one of the other file managers (say, nautilus or caja) in
Lubuntu or Xubuntu, does it succeed?

@Leó your steps to reproduce require using pcmanfm-qt, the default file

good point. you can see dmesg/Xorg.0.log for the default boot here:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1254953/
and indeed No devices detected is at the bottom
if it's relevant to anyone curious, here's the same info for nomodeset:

no luck having sound with the latest liveCD so i'm wondering if this
really isn't a more low-level problem.
i tried grepping dmesg and no luck. i do get something out of syslog:
$ cat /var/log/syslog |grep -ie audio -ie sound
Oct 4 14:31:57 amorphous pbbuttonsd: INFO: Soundsystem requested:
ok, wait, i take it back. i gave the livecd a shot on the radeon-
equipped ppc machine i'm borrowing
(http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/specs/powerbook_g4_1.33_15.html)
and we had sound right out of the box. alsamixer works, aplay -l
provides a sensible result, there's a volume
arild, please go to vt (ctrl-alt-f1 or rather since you're on a ppc fn-
ctrl-alt/option-f1) and use the terminal to get your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and post it here.
easiest way:
1. plug in ethernet
2. sudo ifconfig eth0 up
3. sudo dhclient eth0 (assuming you get your ips from dhcp)
4. sudo apt-get
I don't have the exact same symptoms. It'll start X, but it looks all 16
bit. There is another solution: boot parameters
video=radeonfb:xresxyres[-bpp][@refresh] where xres is
xresolution, yres is yresolution (use whatever's native to your machine;
you can look it up online), bpp is optional, and
