Raymond, thank you for the helpful suggestion. I started alsamixer in a
terminal session and tried your suggestion.
I started the machine in Lucid and ran alsamixer. The settings were:
Master 80, PCM 89, Synth 81, CD 81. I started the machine in Precise
and changed the alsamixer to these

you can add DSP and PCM switch in analog output path so that pulseaudio
can unmute them when the path is selected

try unmute DSP playback switch
Simple mixer control 'DSP',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 63
Mono:

Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-94.50dB] [off]
