While removing appmenu-qt5 solves the issue, it also removes the unified menu
which isn't so nice. For me, simply downloading and installing the qt4 version
of texmaker (for Ubuntu 15.10, works just fine

If you don't want to remove the appmenu-qt5 app, another workaround to make the
shortcuts work again is to launch texmaker without global menu (that is with
the menu bar inside texmaker window).
You can

Thanks everyone! This has been triaged and is in progress, see bug
#1380702. I'm marking this as a duplicate of that one so we can merge
the conversation over there. Please respond with future comments at
After purging appmenu-qt5 my shortcuts (terminal shortcut and media keys
as well) were working again.

Ideally make use of the following program CompizConfig Settings Manager. It
solves most settings issues related to GUI and desktop issues.
I got my screen back within 2 minutes.

Also on my asus zenbook my brightness keys fn+f5 and fn+f6 are the only
fn keys working. They still change the brightness bus there is no pop-up
icon showing the brightness level. This does appear before the first
system standby.

Same problem here.
The short-cuts stop working after resuming from standby AND logging in to TTY2.
When switching to TTY7 the short-cuts work in the login screen, but after
logging in they don't work any more.
When this happens, shutdown/restart/logging out takes ages as well.
