@mahen I can confirm, logging in through ssh and issuing 'killall -9
vlc' unfreezes the desktop after a few seconds.
Jumping back and forth in the video timeline really encourages a total
freeze.

so in theory someone upgrading from xenial to artful and insisting on
staying with Unity as his shell might experience a regression.

The same error happens when running the snap on 16.04, and regardless of
whether libreoffice is installed as a deb package or not.

Installed a 16.04 VM, installed some snaps, opened disks, saw that there were
lots of snaps listed.
