For me this bug causes Skype to crash X (mentioned in linked bug
1286039). System worked fine on 13.04 and 13.10 (over-eager upgrade to
14.04 to get 5.1 HDMI sound working!).

Can't tell if trolling because nothing is stopping you from opening VLC
and disabling overlay video for the time being. Stop trying to open it
with a video and you wouldn't have it crashing your X while trying to
fix the problem.

When Overlay is deactivated in VLC, the problem is worked around.
This could be a temporary solution to see videos.
