Leslie,
Maybe I need to get a USB computer Mike?
This would simplify things for you. The FDMDV software sees the USB headset
as another sound card so the second card is not necessary.
The microphone on the headset would be the voice input and the earphones
would be used for voice output. You

Thanks for the digital mode update. It makes an excellent primer for

I am wondering, does Spezielle Communications Systeme 's proprietary
right to their PACTOR Modems ever expire? How long has PII been
around ???

Yes, good point. However , as ZL1BPU points out
The traditional method of sending Hellschreiber is to key a
Morse-type (CW) transmitter ON for every black spot in a text
The impression that I have had is that while all the modes were
proprietary, Pactor was reverse engineered in software (Linux program)
and hardware/firmware (AEA, Kantronics). The SCS modems always worked
much better since the other companies apparently could not properly
implement some of the
Paul Rinaldo, ARRL CTO, has gone on record as claiming Hell modes to be
J2D when being transmitted from an SSB transmitter as most of us do.
Looking at the ITU Emission Classifications, it seems to me that J2C
would be more appropriate. Since it is not a continuously varying tone
like analog

The main advantage of P2 and P3 is that they have the ability to change

Keep in mind that this is all 3rd part hearsay -- supposedly Kantronics
implementation of Pactor I was by agreement with SCS and the part of that
agreement that would have given Kantronics access to Pactor II and Pactor III
was reneged on by SCS.
I don't know if the agreement was legally

You are correct.
I am sharing this with both the HFDEC (Hams for Disaster and Emergency
Communications) group as well as digitalradio as this seems very
appropriate based on recent comments on HFDEC.
In essence, I have written the FCC toward the end of 2007 and had a
follow up in recent weeks, but no response
Thanks Tony. I think I will go ahead with the USB Mike, As to Com
Port, the Signalink SL 1+ uses VOX to key the rig, so I don't need no
stinkin com port!! LOL
I'll let everyone know how the USB mike works out.

Les,
Forgot about the Signalink vox keying. That eliminates the comport, but it
does bring up another issue with that kind of interface.
The FDMDV signal is wider than most and tends to need a bit more audio to
key the Signalink compared to other modes like PSK31.
