Hi Jerry,

I agree that the relatively low TX power output on 20M
originates in the KPA100 module. Did you build that
module and install it yourself? The LPA circuit in the
base K2 seems to operating normally, and your
peaking of the BPF confirms that.

If you have capability to sweep the 20M/30M LPF
section on the KPA100 for insertion loss, that would
provide more insight. However, those LPF sections
are also inline when the KPA100 is nominally
bypassed - it's only the amplifier circuit that is
bypassed. If there was a significant problem in the
LPF on the KPA100, it would have been evident in
your tests on the 10 watt TX power setting.

I would check the ALC indication on each band, but
set the Power control for 100 watts rather than full
clockwise rotation. You could also monitor the
ALC voltage on the Control board as you change
bands to see if for some reason the ALC control
is reducing TX power on 20 meters. There is no
band-dependent circuitry in the ALC system,
but the SWR forward/reverse power detection
circuit on the KPA100 does have a trimmer cap
to balance the bridge. It would be unlikely for
a resonance condition in the bridge to cause
an elevated VRFDET voltage on one band alone,
but I am curious if the ALC system is doing something
odd on 20 meters only.

73,
Mike, K8CN

Please join us on 3803kHz (NOTE THE NEW FREQUENCY) plus (not minus) QRM
(see the Netlogger discussion, below), 9PM ET Sunday (0100Z Monday).
Note that the net stays on the same local time, when we switch back and
forth to/from Daylight time, so the UTC time changes, but not the local
time.

As daylight persists more into the evening, we may find it more
difficult to conduct the net at its regular time. For the time being,
let's keep it at 9PM ET, as that is getting late on a 'school night' for
a lot of folks, as it is.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE.

The group that meets on 3803 kHz before us has been wrapping up
operations promptly at or before 9PM ET. They are aware of our net that
follows them at 9PM ET, and have made an effort to accommodate us, and
sometimes one or more of them listen in on our net, so I've made a point
of thanking them for their courtesy. Likewise, I've become aware that
another group normally comes on at 10PM ET, so we need to make sure to
wrap up operations by 10PM ET. If any stations wish to continue past
that time, please QSY to a clear frequency.

If you are a US General class licensee, please ensure that your dial is
accurately calibrated and that your transmitter/amplifier combination is
clean and free of splatter, since we will be operating LSB within 3 kHz
of the lower 80M US General class band edge.

I'm using Netlogger, so if you go to
https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fnetlogger.org&c=E,1,Y1NowGMcTZcptz2HmVtjJFXOzaXcrrqikOMBxKL-mgSRwLIlg5p03MDTATlWtwg_KcZ5wb-luNtGV-DKXIlPJgCENwv-hrl3jzOVQYX34n4K&typo=1
 and look for the 80M
Elecraft SSB Net, you will be able to see the exact frequency we've
settled on for the evening. If we find 3803 kHz busy, we will move UP
the band a few kHz, so we can stay in the 80M US General class band.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

73,

Good Evening,

??? Twenty meters had decent propagation.? At the very end the noise
level started rising.? On forty meters there was some noise and a
moderate level of QSB.? About two S units on everyone who checked in.?
It is surprising how well the sun is doing with the sunspot number so low.

??? Seventy degree temperatures have melted more of the snow.? In
another few days it will be gone at my elevation.? The birds are already
taking advantage of the newly hatched insects.

We had a total of 11 check ins this week (including the NCS). Thanks to
all the relays this week that helped to pull in signals that I couldn't
hear clearly. Very nice hearing from everyone tonight. I hope to see all
of you again. The net concluded at 09:44 PM ET.

Conditions were noisy this evening, with an S7 noise floor at my QTH,
and signals were weaker than usual with some QSB.

We have a really great group of folks checking in, and I encourage
anyone in the Midwest and adjoining areas to try to check in next week.

As a reminder, if you go to

 at the net starting
time and look for the 80M Elecraft SSB Net, you should see the frequency
we are using that evening, if we must QSY again due to busy frequencies.

The KHRA1 allows you to use the KH1?s built-in whip antenna on a picnic table
or other flat surface. It provides a secure electrical connection as well as
folding legs to stabilize the transceiver in windy conditions. Great for Parks
On the Air (POTA), camping, or day trips.

Good day all?.

I recently acquired a nice K3S and am having all sorts of problems; not rig
problems. I just installed a win-keyer so that I can use the K3S with N1MM. The
installation went fine but now I can no longer key the rig and get output Any
thoughts or help?

Thanks,

Carol

Does the rig key and transmit CW if you plug a key into the rear-panel
KEY jack? But not if you plug the WinKeyer output into the same jack?

Is the K3 VOX turned on?

Make sure VOX is turned on in the K3 and that it is set for straight key
input ... i.e. internal keyer off.? If your K3 is properly configured,
shorting the RCA Phono plug that goes into the Winkey should key the
K3.? It is possible that you've got the Winkey configured for the second
[KEY2] port, but I doubt that.

Years ago, the small fire in the corner of the chassis would lead us
immediately to the area of the problem.? Not so much these days, but
remember, "We always assume the worst. It rarely if ever is."

I don't have time now, but tomorrow, I'll look up the details and reply
again.
