You may need to run with the vesa driver.
A proper xorg.conf was missing. I needed to create one with: X -configure
Then I used it with:
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
export DISPLAY=:0.0
gnome-session

Let me add some details and suggest something:
X -configure created xorg.conf.new with:
Driver nouveau
VendorName nVidia Corporation
BoardName GeForce 7150M
The board name is wrong, but it works fine.
Some init script could execute X -configure before trying to start X.
