It is more expensive, but not that much more. I bought 512mb of RDRAM for

Is RDRAM a better choice for systems used for scanning and
processing large 2d image files?
The PC mags report recently (maybe Nov-Dec) that RDRAM is only a few
percent faster than DDR. It's no
Well, I don't have an old stuff to scan, I actually started to shoot slides
intensively about two years ago and wouldn't mind too much for the IR GEM
and restoration abilities (however dust/scratches cleaning might be
appealing, would the SS4000 be such great deal).

I too am used to older Nikon scanners and combining
multiple scans at different exposures. I have been
using the Minolta for about a month, and have not as
yet found an image which is beyond the usable dynamic
range of the scanner in a single scan. My images are
mostly Velvia, Astia and Pan-F so
Hi Alex,
Do you have any darkroom experience?
The reason I ask is that Photoshop is designed around photo-darkroom
jargon, with masks and filters and the like, and it might therefore be
more comfortable for that reason. Since I don't use the other packages
I can't comment how they are designed

Looks like you have version 1.05. If I were you I would update to version 1.1.

I know. I've had my SS4000 for 2 years and am happy. But (significant)
dynamic range improvement is probably the only reason I would upgrade short

after a week of relaxation in Denmark I was looking forward to receiving

is that on startup the New Hardware Wizard keeps detecting it as new

Thanks Ralf, very valuable contribution.
I was considering one as an option to SS4000, however I see there is still
no alternative to excellent SS4000.

It looks like this is either dust in the calibration light path, or more
likely is a bit of dirt on the glass over the CCD. It could also be a
small flaw in the CCD.
Hi, Ed,
I'd be happy if that was true. But, if you look closely, there
Compupic from Photodex (

other formats). It's a GREAT program, but it can't handle 16bit TIFF
files. The Photodex folks have yet to be convinced that people
