Which version of PSDR are you using Brett? Version 2.2.3 fixed a very
big issue with AM reception (AGC tracking the sideband energy rather
than the carrier energy) that was present in all the previous 2.x.x
versions and the later 1.x.x versions. That being said, I do notice what
sounds like

I thought the grunge I was hearing was a problem with my flex 5k but it turned
out to be Pearl Jam.
I'm sorry but I could not resist.

Running here PSDR V 2.2.3 with Flex 5000. The only time I occasionally
hear some type of peak distortion or muddy-type distortion on 75 meters
is when listening to strong AM signals operating class E type rigs. I
don't hear on it on broadcast AM, commercial SW AM, or amateurs running
current

I tried

Based on your detailed description of your issue, it looks like the
FlexControl drivers didn't load properly or there is a com port
conflict, but some further troubleshooting activities will be needed to
confirm this assumption.

Just on a chance, are you plugging that Flexcontrol into a USB 3.0
port? Mine works perfectly on a 2.0 port, but fails completely on a 3.0
port.

Also remember that this is a small antenna with a knob on the end! I would
consider a toroid on the end near the computer if possible to prevent it
from receiving (and even possibly radiating computer-generated hash).

I think that is it.
I was listening to guys with very strong signals running class E rigs and it
was very noticeable, yet on the homebrew receiver they sound fine.
It was only under modulation, and I think they push the positive modulation
quite high.
What as the problem with early versions
Interesting, I was under the impression that most modern AM transmitters
for the BCB were class-D and Class-E type but I don't know for sure.

I believe you mentioned the same, or similar problem, on AMfone.net, back
around January/February 2010, when you still had the 5000 and were
running version 1.16 or 1.18.

Is it wise to use the power switch to turn off the FLex 5000 or is it ok to
use the main power supply?
I've been using my main power switch for my other radios and pondered if
this was wise with the Flex.

I experienced a similar symptom with my flex control, happened when I plugged
the control into a different USB jack than I had done when I originally
configured it. Seems by doing that, windows will create a new virtual com port
with a different port number for the flex control and once again
