Looking at the manual on the 5000A I see how to make recording of the received
signals, saving and playing back but how do I make a recording of my audio to

Jim,
Turn on Monitor. Start recording received audio, activate PTT, speak into
your microphone. Then use a .wav file editor such as Audacity (free) to rim
off the excess at the beginning end of the recording.
