I would like to try some portable ops with my Flex 3000 and can use a
PCMCIA card with Firewire
but want to be sure to get a card that will work well with my Flex,
anyone with experience in such?

I would suggest going to Tiger Direct or Amazon and searching for a
reconditionedHP with Firewire port. They are a dime a dozen with Win 7 on
them. I have bought(3) reconditioned laptops with fire wire port. They all

Best to have a laptop with a Express slot , so that you can change the FireWire
adapter if and when the FW port may fail. Over 50% of the built-in FW chipsets
will not work or not supported by the FW driver and if they fail you will have
to replace the motherboard in the laptop.
