I installed the variable speed fan controller designed by W1GHZ. It's the bee's knees, the cat's pajamas. Someone was selling kits for this but I've lost track of who. I also did the nibbling thing, although I found the nibbling tool less effective that a small saw. I did that first.

If you go to the photo section of the Flex Radio Yahoo Group you will find a snapshot and a schematic of a simple device I made to quiet the fan on the SDR -1000. it basically uses a diode string to drop the voltage to the fan on RX and a PNP to short out the string on transmit. I use pin 6
