. The current fan is 15mm. A 20mm fan it starts
becoming a tight fit.

It's 80 X 80 X 25 mm. I had planned on external front mount. I will also
test out the thermistor operation with temp probe on my DMM and heat
source (XYL's hair dryer - previously tested to 170 degF.) before I
bother to do any installing.

I installed the variable speed fan controller designed by W1GHZ.
It's the bee's knees, the cat's pajamas. Someone was selling kits
for this but I've lost track of who.
I also did the nibbling thing, although I found the nibbling tool
less effective that a small saw. I did that first.
Hello all,
The W1GHZ fan speed controls are available on this web page

What exactly are the specs of the fan? Looks like a 80mm...

Has anyone tried the Silenx iXtrema Pro 80 mm Thermistor fan. Supposed
to be very quiet and comes with attached thermistat. I will try one
tomorrow. $18.99 at Microcenter in Mpls.

I have read a lot about the SDR-1000 fan noise, and must admit I find it a
little loud for me.
I would simply move the unit, but the cables aren't long enough..so, I am
looking for a solution.
My research turned up a couple of solutions nibbling out the metal behind
the fan grill (does it really
This brings up a question I have been wanting to ask for a while.
How many cfm is the fan in the SDR-1000 and what are it's phyisical dimensions?
I ask because their are some very quiet fans on the market these days for the
PC gaming world. I would be willing to replace the fan in the 1000

Nibbling out the area contained by the holes in the front of the chassis
will reduce the noise by nearly 80%. Went from extremely annoying to
knowing the fan is on.

If you go to the photo section of the Flex Radio Yahoo Group you will find a
snapshot and a schematic of a simple device I made to quiet the fan on the SDR
-1000. it basically uses a diode string to drop the voltage to the fan on RX
and a PNP to short out the string on transmit. I use pin 6
I not only added the thermostat, but also nibbled out the area contained by the
holes on the front panel. I found the fan mod made the noise non existent in
colder weather and as previously quoted, from annoying to knowing the fan is
on. The two best things I have done for the SDR radio is
There are some higher CFM fans that are actually quieter (the center hub
assembly of the fan motor is smaller and thus does not block the air as
much). I've installed one on my SDR-1000 and also mounted the fan to the
outside of the case and use a snap on fan filter to keep dust out of the

This illustrates the point that the noise is primarily due to the
dynamics of the airflow. If the
Thanks for all the tips.
I nibbled out the front of the cabinet where the fan seats and it reduced
the fan noise considerably.
Still not where I would like it, but much better and liveable.
Much appreciated.

My fan sure seems like it is getting louder. Is there anything we can do to
quiet it down any? It is louder than my AL-80B.
Guess I could put it under the radio table in a cabinet.

Have you tried opening up the fan opening in the cabinet? I used a
nibbling tool to cut all the area containing the tiny little holes out
and the noise went down dramatically. Next I will probably remove the
filter - way too dense for the job.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but the fan in my SDR-1000

Fan noise, what fan noise? I have a 1 GHz network Level 3 switch on
my desk, it has 2 fans that are so noisy that I can't hear the SDR fans at all.
