like this are often caused by wraparound bugs or infinite loops
in my experience, although there are lots of other possibilities. If
you can get a stack traceback when it crashes, that will is quite likely
to give a solid clue.

Sure. pkg_add(1) has a '-r' option for fetching remotely, and

the device?
Start with usb(4). HID devices tend to be easier to deal with than
others, but I doubt your instruments are in that category.

that next time then. The actual partition size was
~200GB, but around 74Gb data.
If you can, it's always *much* preferable to dump an unmounted
partition. I suspect your problems here had more to do with the bad
disk, though.

is just out of date. Try building from the
port, or wait for the package set to get rebuilt (and hope nothign
else changes first).
