Have you ever tried that? I've almost killed both hard drives doing an
on-line
some of its benefits. I
typically set my root partition at about 512 MB and then create LVM
partitions for /home, /usr, /opt, and /var. (You could do the same for
/tmp, but I use tmpfs for that.) It's possible to do LVM on the /
partition, but that requires an initrd to work properly.

it works fine under XP. The only options I know of are NTFS (flakey linux

Just a guess, but: check your kernel config. See if CONFIG_INOTIFY is set.
If not, recompile with that set and see if it behaves better.

It's been at least 5 years since I last used it, but I believe that is what

when I load up gentoo it loads up a basic console login and when I try to
startx it loads up a really basic X interface with two terminals and a
analog looking clock. When I try to use xfce-session it loads up xfce but
things are out of place and it looks more like a basic X

Instead I believe that you have to do some other magic to encode the data
correctly. I would recommend looking at the source code for mount and see
what happens.

string. I don't believe that is the case with NFS.
