where the end of the register is, while gnucash is changing information at the
top of the screen where I'm not paying attention.

Another point of possible confusion for even long-time users like me is
that the column titles will change as the curser moves around in the
transaction display, so the user must carefully note the current position
of the curser to correctly interpret the column title.

A transaction always has a Notes field, but the Notes field is only
*visible* in a register if either View>Transaction Log or View>Double
Line is set.

The simple work-around is to copy /usr/lib/libz.1.dylib to
/Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib/, most easily done from
Terminal:
cp /usr/lib/libz.1.dylib /Applications/Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/lib/
