Alan, The guide has an introductory session. The present version doesn't have a full explanation of the way accountants use debits and credits but the next version will. You will find a pretty good explanantion on Wikipedia and a few other sites. Look up Double Entry, Debits and Credits with

Morayweb, Gnucash, well any method of double entry bookkeeping can do so much more for you. What you have described is much as double entry was many centuries ago. You can (and should) set up the accounts so that you can get much more information about the finances of the camp. Imagine

To deal with money coming in you would have to create an income account Income: Camp Fees for example. Depending on how your bank implemented the CSV either the values in the column I assigned the Withdrawal header, labelled Debit in the first column your bank supplied. If so you don't need to

In gnucash a transaction is always between two accounts, but your csv file only hints at one. That means you need to help gnucash to learn what the second account should be. What you have created now are transactions from the "Camps Out" to the "Camps Out" account, which really means no

As guess as to what might have happened: When you select the invoice and credit note in the payment window, gnucash will automatically calculate the difference between them and set the payment or refund field to that amount. That is, it assumes you intend to fully "pay" for all the documents
