The possibility suggested by another user that the focus has been
'hijacked' by a window that is out of view is real. One way to detect that
is to press the Windows key and see what appears. I actually use
Windows+Tab frequently to navigate around the screen.

Can't say what your issue is, but I have been running GnuCash since 2015 and
many versions and have never seen the issue you describe. I am currently
running version 5.3 with Windows 11. Hopefully, someone will be able to help,
but it might be something local to your system.

When I have had something like this it was often a hidden GnuCash window
that had captured focus, so clicking on anything in another window does not
work.
For instance, when retrieving quotes, I could not do anything after it
