Using File/Quit did in fact save the settings so I'm good to go. I do have a backup strategy too - SyncBack Pro syncs 3 PCS on LAN. Does backup to 2 external HDs. And use BackBlaze for cloud storage. I get a bit anal about the financial files so I even do the SaveAs too!! Thanks for all the

Jack, I'm not seeing this issue on 4.2 on Win 10, Mac OS or Ubuntu 20.04... What os are you running on, do you have write permissions on the preferences file which I think from memory is .gnucash.gcm. If you go in and change column widths in Gnucash does the file timestamp get updated when you

I'm running 4.2. Adjusted column widths - looked at the View Menu and Register & Register Default options in Preferences - found nothing. I saved the file with the adjustments in place and poof - modified widths gone when I reopened the file. To be honest I could never get them to save in 3.x

Yes, it's GTK bug. I had my doubts. I could never install gtk+3.0 package as mentioned in the wiki. There were some dependency issues. Debian Stretch doesn't have them yet. Anyway, I can manage it for now as Lithium/Buster is just around the corner. - Regards, Justin Mathew

Double-click the centre of the column header. This may very well be a function of your OS, however, since gnucash is written on toolboxes that behave slightly differently depending on context.  In my context, ubuntu linus (and 2.6, in case that matters), this works. Jeff Abrahamson
