I totally agree with your entire remarks! Seems like it worked everywhere
before (not cash bets!). I have seen the "reverse" when pasting into a card
account as well and just figured that was the logic somehow, intended to
eventually ask but it was not a big deal.

I think the issue really boils down to "what exactly is getting copied and
pasted?"
I don't know the specifics, but as far as I understand it, a transaction in
GnuCash looks unitary to the end user, but actually consists of a strange
hybrid: a Transaction entry with (at least) two

Jack's method should work too.
It might give different results depending on whether the cursor is sitting
in the new transaction line or on an existing transaction while pasting. I
haven't personally tried it.
