I would think, for the OPs original purpose, a variation of something like what is described here: https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Using_GnuCash#GnuCash_on_Holidays_with_yo ur_friend, would be the easiest to implement and keep up with—no income considerations at all. Regards,

I suggest you don't do this unless you both suffer from OCD. It will lead to disharmony and discord because no matter how hard you try there is never true "equality" in any relationship. Instead, live, love, enjoy and support each other. Do things together and don't worry about who's wallet
