PRO-LIFE SEMINAR HELD AT ST. XAVIER’S COLLEGE


The Department of Philosophy and the Centre of Value Education for Dialogue, St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, in collaboration with St. Luke’s Medical Guild, organized a One-Day State Level Seminar on ‘ The Freedom of Choice & the Need to be Pro-Life: A Focus on Abortion & Euthanasia’, on 27th August 2011.The seminar was held in the College Seminar Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In the Inaugural session, the Principal, Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa, expressed his concern over the degradation of our moral system and the need for respecting life. The Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Wiseman Pinto wherein he stressed that we should respect life and take responsibility to safeguard life from the womb to the tomb. Dr. Pinto focused on the following 6 factors that could be critical in forming consciences and values in our young generation today-traditionalism, modernism, secularism, spiritualism, professionalism and educationalism.

The first session was delivered by Dr. Roshan Nazareth on the topic ‘Culture of Death’. He emphasized on several issues converging to the culture of death and supported his statements with interesting statistics. Dr. Silvano Sapeco, the resource person for the next session spoke on the topic ‘ Respect for Life’. He rightly stressed on the fact that God is the manager and owner of our life and we, as stewards of our lives, cannot destroy it.

In the post-lunch session, Fr. Daniel Pereira delivered a lecture on ‘the Freedom of Choice’. He threw light on the meaning of Freedom of Choice and the several factors affecting it and ended with how we can make a choice to promote the growth of life.

The next session was a technical session of paper presentation which was chaired by Dr. (Ms.) Zinia Lobo Silva. Five papers were presented with respect to the themes of the seminar.

The seminar concluded with the Valedictory Function. The Chief Guest was Dr. Jagadish Kakodkar who enlightened the audience with his enriching experiences as a doctor. He said , at times, to make decisions on euthanasia and abortion is like a situation where you are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. The seminar ended with the distribution of certificates.
