A One day State Level Seminar on the topic, “Post-Liberation Advances in Technology: Implementation of GPS and GSM Modems in Embedded Systems” was organized by the departments of Electronics and BCA of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Goa, in association with the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa on 26th November 2011.

The Chief Guest for the Inaugural function, Mr. Deepak Chodankar, Vice President of SmartLink Network System Ltd, Goa well versed in the field of Embedded Systems spoke on the three dimensions : Time, Tide and Technology, that waits for nobody. He spoke of the abundance use of Embedded Systems in our lives and that technology is at our disposal to be used at the right time and in the right way.

The Principal, Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa, addressed the gathering sharing few thoughts on how technology has engulfed humans in day to day life. He also urged the students to use technology for the betterment of humanity and not to be slaves to it.

Mrs. Vilma Fernandes , Coordinator of the Seminar introduced the topics of the Seminar and spoke on the benefits of this technology to society.

Mr. Daryl Gonsalves, Associate Professor, proposed the Vote of thanks.

To get our young enthusiastic minds started the first session was presented by our Keynote Speaker, Mr. S. Natarajan, Country Business Manager, Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd., speaking about the vision of Intel to increase the number of internet users in the country and the productivity of the number of devices. He linked four basic elements that are used in today’s technology world, i.e., internet connection, port of choice, ease of design and intelligence updating our knowledge on the latest Intel products and technology. He explained the features of Intel’s Atom Processor CE 4200 series, that fuels innovation across many mobile devices focusing on security, a need for the hour in the years to come. He gave a detailed knowledge about Intel VPro TXT, a hardware based mechanism to protect systems from attack. He also informed the students of various Intel’s programmes conducted in the field of education.

The delegates participated enthusiastically during the Question Answer Session.

The second session was a complete breakthrough and truly enriching as it gave the participants a hands on experience on the Embedded hand held device,i.e., UHD, showcased by a team of members from SmartLink Network Sys. Ltd. Mr. Deepak Chodankar briefed us on the device giving its uses, specification, parts and modules.

It was followed by information sessions on Embedded Devices like GPS(Global Positioning System), RFID(Radio Frequency Identification )presented by Mr. Amish Pai Dukle, Fingerprint sensor and Smart cards presented by Mr. Avner Madeira , GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) and its applications presented by Mr. Victor Silveira, General Manager, SmartLink Network Sys. Ltd. Mr. Deshpande, Sales Manager, spoke on safety standard RoHS implemented by SmartLink. He also spoke on the proper way to dispose the e-waste in the factory according to the standards.

The practical session was the most enriching since the delegates got a hands on experience with the handheld Embedded System, which included RFID, GPS, GSM, SmartCard Reader and many more peripherals attached.

The Chief Guest for the valedictory session, Mr. Antonio Mascarenhas, Sr. Scientist and Engineer, spoke on the technology and motivated the delegates to participate in these kinds of seminars and hands on training should also be incorporated. He advised the students to follow three rules (i) Understanding the concept (ii) Know your tools well (iii) to write the application. He also told the audience that to be perfect criticism was essential.

The mementos were presented to the speakers and certificates to the delegates were presented by Father.

The participants enthusiastically participated in the practical session which concluded the one day seminar.
