        some way of deleting spam ads seems to be a good idea.

Yes, but...

* I can't delete the spam myself. 
* Editing archives may cause legal problems for the service.
* I'd prefer not to give out unix logins for this.
* The best place for blocking spam is at the list server.
* Adding a web based spam cleanup function is tons of work. 
  (There isn't even a concept of an owner for a particular list archive.)

        the bad news is, now i can't tweak my "Date:" field so
        that my messages come from the Year 3000, and my messages
        stay on top of the pile for the next 1000 years.

PS. This tool works well for getting spammers kicked off their ISP.
