A group like this should need no introduction to Dennis Ritchie. Anyone using C and *nix should have heard of him. Many even learned about him from text books. He was the unsung hero on whose work, the whole of modern computing is based on - FOSS or otherwise. There is no modern OS untouched by his pioneering work on C and Unix.
Sadly, the world lost him yesterday (12 Oct 2011) at the age of 70.
