Hi Chuck-
The simplest way to avoid generating bounces is to have the primary server
accept mail from you for all addresses and delete them silently on its own.
But that does not protect you from a heavy dictionary attack that can bring
down both the primary server and your cache.
So we use
We do it with Postfix on a Linux box. That also lets us put ASSP in
front of it which although I've heard some grumbling here about it is a
great antispam frontend. This postfix/ASSP frontend sits in front of our
Imail box and also in front of our Exchange box. We've even used it to
control major

I am wanting to configure a backup spool someone else in the world,
actually about 10 miles away from the primary, and I don't know what
to set Mail Relay Options to for the backup spool. I don't want just
anyone to be able to send mail, but I can't open this up to relay
for everyone
On the backup server you will need to add
theprimary servers IP address to the relay for ip addresses. There
are a few other things you need to do in terms of setting up your host files on
the backup machine. The KB has a bit more info http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19980116-DM01.htm
This is what I have been trying to get to work. I have been told it can be
done but have not been able to verify that it is working yet. I am using
2003 server and it appears all you have to do is create the domain name and
then set it up to forward to your IMail server.
I hope to find a way to
in.

This is what I have been trying to get to work. I have been told
Can MS SMTP/Pop server on 2000 be setup to act as a holder for all
email sent to it (multiple domains), till the primary Imail server
comes back online?
SMTP? Yes. POP3? No.
Many, many people use MS SMTP as a store-and-forward server. The
configuration concept is simple:
Can a wildcard setting like this be done?!
Wildcards are the opposite of what you're talking about; if you want
to run store-and-forward without being an open relay, you have to
allow relaying only to specific domains while banning all others (i.e.
banning wildcard domains).

Which tests is the backup server failing? The only one I can think of might
be the relative addressing one where the send a message in a format like
this user@somedomain!yourdomain. This is not really a failure but will look
like one to them because the message is accepted by the server for
I'm not answering your question because there are other people here that
are more knowledgeable and experienced in this than I am. I don't want to
mess anything up. Actually, I wanted to ask you a question.
I have my old post.office software I am migrating from and I could use

If you do what software do you use? Imail? How does the licensing
work on this seeing that no user accounts will exist.
You would need a 250-user license. The instructions are in the KB if
you search for store and forward and also in the archives of this
list (like just about

John,
Can you share how to run a routine to backup the

nah, use a load balanced cluster. bookmatch a
pair of alphas or 2550 dells with common storage. build for mscs (m$ cluster
service). search m$'s kb for details on mscs. if one box fails the other picks
up immediately

Kris,
That would work, but usually this kind of 'failsafe' operation uses some
other software to perform the checking of the server and switching over to
the secondary as needed. Usually that mean the cost of the failover software
and a second copy of IMail (it is licensed for installing on only

backup MX doesn't work like that.
