Courier, long-time great modems, data fax, is the same NOT the as
Sportster. USR knows how to make great professional modems, but mass
market Sportster is just crap to be avoided for serious work.

Sportsters have known issues with fax handshakes, actually. Multitech makes
the best modems for faxing, the external 33.6 will provide perfect service
with no problems 99.999% of the time.

Can you borrow another modem? Maybe an old courrier, a zyxel 1496 or
newer? I bet there's just some handshake pb between the fax driver
and the modem,
