The thumbnail from a GPhoto2 device is rendered/created by the phone/camera. So

The cause is probably not the image itself. GPhoto2 has a problem with your
camera device/connection. Which camera model is it?

It could also be the parent from the first dialog. The maintenance tool has the

Which digiKam version are you using exactly? The Ubuntu version is a Snap
package. Snap packages use a sandbox and restrict digiKam to the local home
