Cube is always offered in desktop behavior> virtual desktops, even with

The cube started working normally once I manually set the renderer to opengl.

No I had the cube working normally, then I did an upgrade to 5.5.5 from 5.5.4,
then the cube stopped working, but the settings for it was still available and
selected, so I didn't realize that

The effect should not be available if you're on xrender compositing.
So you picked xrender deliberately?
Did you configure the effect from the effects kcm or the virtual desktop kcm?

settings, or have it grayed out until opengl is selected?
