I don't understand why testing this from a text console has any merit. A Linux
text console (e.g. ctrl-alt-f3) can only render characters, not graphics. The

I refuse to have my mail stored in the bowels of kmail and want to know exactly

Yes, still valid. Some method of re-indexing mail files (mbox in particular,
but also imap and maildir) is needed because kmail tends to get out of sync.
