Public bug reported:
Boot looping since initial 14.04 install (nomodeset was the workaround I used).
I recently upgraded to 16.04.3 and fell in the same issue as upgrade overwrote
my /etc/default/grub without prompting, AFAIR.
Digging the issue I found another possible workaround on the web...
I built the next test kernel, up to the following commit:

The test kernel can be downloaded from:

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?
Note, to test this kernel, you need to install both the linux-image and
I back ported debian kernel commit 3f937de to Xenial, Artful and Bionic.
I also had to perform a cherry pick of commit b6fb293f2.
I built test kernels for each of these releases, which can be downloaded from:

Can you test these kernels and see if it
It sounds like the kernel is ruled out as the cause of this bug. The
bug still happens with Xenial and 4.10 based kernels on Artful and the
bug didn't happen on Zesty or Xenial prior to upgrading to Artful. This
indicates something outside of the kernel.
