today I have to roll back to 4.15.0-158-generic on my 18.04 box because of the
same bug.

I can confirm this bug blocking me from flashing boards with ESP32 and
ESP8266. Not updating other Ubuntu boxes for now. On Discord, I've also
been in contact with other people not able to flash similar boards. My
setup works with a CP2104 USB/serial adapter chip, different driver,
same purpose.
Sorry, I realised I didn't have the esp8266 chip connected.
After connecting, here is brief output:
