Re: [lace] Help With Skeined Cotton Thread

2022-02-25 Thread Jean Leader
Hi Adele,

I think it’s probably very fine cotton. In the Romance of the Lace Pillow by
Thomas Wright (1971 reprint from Paul Minet) on p.123 it says
“Many workers use ordinary Lace Thread (which is, of course, cotton),
sometimes called Gassed Thread, from the fact that it is drawn at a slow but
regular pace through a flame of gas in order to deprive it of all film. A two
ounce packet contains four “parcels,” and each parcel a specified number
of “slips”. In the case of the extremely fine “14 slip thread” there
are fourteen slips, in the case of the “12 slip thread” 12 slips, and so
on down to “3 slip,” which is the coarsest in use.”

Somewhere else that I can’t find right now, I’m sure I’ve read that
these “parcels" were tied with pink thread. I’m sending you a photo of
what I think mayt be one of these parcels that I have - it is about 15cm (6in)
long tied with pink string top and bottom and has 14 divisions separated by
the darker pink thread. It only weighs about an eighth of an ounce on my
kitchen scales which may not be very accurate for small amounts. I have other
skeins of thread like this but haven’t had much success when I’ve tried to
unwind them - I suspect the thread isn’t as strong as it would have been
when new. I’ll send you a photo of the thread separately.

[lace] Using Zoom for lace teaching

2020-12-16 Thread Jean Leader
I have been using Zoom for teaching lace classes for quite a few weeks now,
trying to work out what was best for both myself and my students, not easy when
we all had different combinations of desktop/laptop computers and/or
mac/android devices. With the help of David (DH) I’ve now mounted a couple of
guides to using Zoom for lace and textile teaching, one for tutors, the other
for students, which you can find on my website at

I’d love to know if you find them useful and whether you have any suggestions

Hello everyone,

Just thought I'd let everyone know about some updates I’ve made to my website
recently - you’ll find links to them on the home page at

There’s a picture of the cover of my new Bedfordshire book which will be

Britain, information about my Zoom lace classes, and also news of a recent
update to our Lace app.

And now that’s done I need to start thinking about something for December…

Devon,
I can’t remember now who told me about ‘La dentelle à l’aiguille’ by Brigitte
Delesques Dépalle but in this she describes both the Argentan and tortillée
mesh being made on a grid of laid threads. I have tried it (rather larger than
it would have been worked) and it does look right. And it’s certainly easier
than working stitches and then whipping or buttonholing over them. If you’re
interested I can send you an photo of my effort.

Re: [lace] Mystery lace

2020-05-22 Thread Jean Leader
Well, if you look at Joseph Seguin’s La Dentelle (avaiable on the Arizona site)
Plate XXXVI you might call it Guipure Façon Angleterre, or Guipure
Anglaise. They both have the same coiled ground and one of them also has
cucumber tallies.

Allhallows Museum Honiton has two flounces with this coiled ground which
Santina Levey reckoned were English therefore Honiton late 17th C. They are
illustrated in John Yallop’s ‘The History of the Honiton Lace Industry’ (the
book is his PhD thesis and he was the honorary curator at AllHallows). The
Glasgow Museums lace collection also has two pieces with this coiled ground,
one of which is very similar to one of the Honiton pieces. Back in 1993 John
Yallop told me that the use of the coiled ground is associated with Flanders
around 1700 but it may be found at much later dates in Eastern Europe.

[lace] A puzzle and an updated website

2019-06-20 Thread Jean Leader
Dear all,

David has been busy and has now updated my website to make it 'mobile
friendly’. We’ve made a few other changes too - some extra images and a couple
of new pages. One of these is about my new DVD, Color in Bedfordshire Lace,
which I filmed with John and Kathy Hensel last summer. The other has photos of
a present I was given when we were on holiday in France earlier this month - a
ceramic box shaped like a lace pillow. I’ve been trying to find out more about
it without success so I’m wondering if any of you have ever seen something
similar - you can see it at

https://www.jeanleader.net/collection/ceramic.html

Jean

PS Technical - If you have visited my website recently it is possible that the
new version will look dreadful to start with. This is because browsers store
copies of previously visited files to speed performance. Generally you can get
over this by refreshing or re-loading, however in this case the problem is with
a secondary file, a style sheet. One thing you can try is to to load that
directly by going to to
https://www.jeanleader.net/scripts/jean.css, then go back to the page and
refresh. If that doesn’t work you need to clear all the history from you
browser or wait until other pages you’ve viewed displace my old pages.

[lace] New lace website

2019-05-13 Thread Jean Leader
Some years ago I wrote a couple of dozen web pages for The Lace Guild website
(under the title “The Craft of Lace”) in which I provided a historical review
of different types of European laces. Following changes in that organization
the material has been on my own website, which is not yet adapted to adjust to
mobile devices. For that reason, and because of its size, we have now mounted
the material on its own new website, “Lace Types”, at www.lacetypes.com. We
have tested it mainly on Macs, iPhones and iPads. Please let us know if you
have any problems viewing it on other operating systems or devices.

Susan,

Looks like you’ve discovered the hard way that threads with the same number of
wraps per cm/inch don’t all work up the same. Although they have similar wraps
Cordonnet Special 70 is a hard 6-ply thread designed for crochet, while
Tanne/Cotona 30 is a soft 2-ply thread which ‘squashes’ and ‘beds together’
well which is what’s best for bobbin lace. How lace #3 looks in the
illustration in my book is how it should look.

I have worked #3 with Special Dentelles 80 (also a hard 6-ply thread like the
70) because I wanted to use colour but enlarged the pricking 125% for that.

If you want to stick to Cordonnet Special 70 you could use an enlarged pricking
or you could try Egyptian cotton 36/2, Mettler 30, DMC broder machine 30, all a
bit finer that Tanne/Cotona 30, or single strands of 6-strand embroidery floss
which is a bit thicker, and see how they worked with the pricking you have.

Re: [lace] Central Repository of Errata - brilliant idea!

2018-09-06 Thread Jean Leader
Some of you will remember Vibeke Ervo who sadly died five years ago. As someone
who was involved in publishing and book indexing she very much wanted to get an
online errata project going and back in 2003 had even put together a list of
errata in Pat Earnshaw’s books and started to gather others. She was working
with someone who later dropped out. At this point David and I offered to help
get things online but it never got any further. I can’t remember exactly what

MYB Textiles in Ayrshire Scotland has updated 100-year old lace machines that
used punched cards so that they are now networked to CAD computers in their
design office. As Gil said the cards are basic computing technology. See

[lace] Portuguese Translation added to OIDFA Translator

2018-08-08 Thread Jean Leader
We have just added Portuguese terms to the OIDFA Translator at
https://www.oidfa.com/translate.html .

For once, these have been drawn from third-party sources rather than from
Portuguese native speaking lacemakers. We would therefore especially welcome
any feedback from any Portuguese native speakers. There may be mistakes and
omissions, or there may be alternatives listed that are rarely used. Please let
us know.

Either use the web form, reply directly to me, or talk to me at the OIDFA Lace

Re: [lace] early lace video

Devon,

The UK Lace Guild has a draft of a book on lacemaking by Ethel Nettleship in
which the instructions tell you to work with one hand for the bobbins and the
other for placing pins. I can’t remember the details and I’m away from home
right now but have them somewhere at home. I can look them out when I get home
at the end of the month. Ethel Nettleship was an interesting lady who made lace
in colour with subjects like parrots, cats, and even bread and butter! As far
as I remember she was making lace in the 1930s and 40s - the UK Lace Guild now
has her surviving lace and prickings in its Museum Collection.

For DMC I was either told by someone or read somewhere (I don’t remember which
now) that there’s a number on or opposite the title page that gives the date of
printing.
For example, my little green copy of the Encyclopedia of Needlework has 412
which is April 1912,
my copy of Les Dentelles aux Fuseaux (1re serie) has 530 which is May 1930,
and my copy of Die Kloppelspitzen ((II.Serie) has 225 which is February 1925

Having an older date for the Bobbin Lace 2nd series (the one in German) than
for the 1st series (the one in French) may seem wrong but these books were
re-printed many times and the earlier 2nd series has the 1st series advertised
in the back.

My Encyclopedia of Needlework has the Bobbin Lace 1st series advertised in the
back but not the 2nd series, which indicates that the 2nd series was published
later than 1912.

Hope that makes sense

which is part of the Lace Guild’s Collection. The original label in the book

Re: [lace] Chrysanthemum & Tonder lace

Susan,

Tonder bobbin lace (with a slash across the o) is definitely from Denmark - ask
Bobbi Donnelly who is teaching Tonder at the IOLI Convention in July
(https://internationalorganizationoflace.org/Conventions/2017Convention/Classes/amclasses.html)
There could be whitework from Tonder but bobbin lace is what the small town is
known for nowadays.

Chrysanthemum lace I’d never come across until I saw the book by Cathy
Belleville but I believe it’s related to Bruges lace which would possibly make
it Belgian rather than Dutch.

My impression is that there were a variety of 'strange' laces, that don't fit
nicely into any category in the late 19th century. They seem to have all sorts
of mixed techniques and I wonder if they were part of the handmade lace
industry's attempts to produce lace that hadn't / couldn't be copied by machine

Those patterns started off with a simple flame pattern that I designed for the
Lace Guild's Young Lacemaker magazine. Then I offered it to my local lace group
in Glasgow at different sizes and was amazed with the results. We ended up with
enough pieces to make several small panels, two of which have ended up in the

The pattern also appeared in 'Lace' and several other groups used it for group

This is the system IOLI had before it was changed to the current one over 10
years ago. The problems with a single renewal date are (A) having to estimate
how many extra magazines to have printed to allow for new members joining
during the year, (B) finding somewhere to store all these extra magazines, (C)
the extra postage costs for sending out additional magazines (not something you

I have heard that too, but wonder if it could also be to do with modern
industrial processing versus the old hand processing of the flax. Hand
processing is likely to be gentler and might also give the opportunity to
select the finer fibres.

Many years ago when I was a new lacemaker I also had the idea of spinning linen
thread to make lace and even produced enough to make a few inches of a Torchon
fan edging. Then I moved on to Bucks Point and it certainly wasn’t fine enough
for that so I gave up. I’m a better spinner now so maybe I should try again but
first I’d have to find the prepared flax!

[lace] Lace for iPad and iOS10 - important

2016-09-21 Thread Jean Leader
The recent release of iOS 10 (September 2016) causes Lace for iPad to crash on
launch. The iPhone version is not affected.

Unfortunately there is no quick fix for this and Lace for iPad will have to be
restructured and rebuilt from scratch. We sincerely apologize for this
inconvenience and will do all we can to expedite the release of a new version,
but regret that it is likely to take several months. In the interim, we can
offer a copy of the iPhone app to anyone who has purchased the iPad app. This
can be mounted on the iPad under iOS 10, although it does not take advantage of
the full area of the iPad.

If you have already purchased Lace for iPad it will work fine up to iOS 9 -
it’s just the latest update to iOS 10 that is the problem.

You’ll also find photos from this year’s Congress in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Hi Helen,

Your memory isn’t playing tricks - it’s Lutac lace named after Lucienne
Tack-van Maldere, the person who developed it. She wrote a book called Lutac
Relief which has what I always think of as a cauliflower on the cover. In her
instructions the padding is covered with cloth stitch. Karen Marie Iversen from
Denmark also uses the technique for jewellery and she covers the padding with
half stitch which means that the padding threads are visible and become part of
the design (there are patterns in her book Modern Lace Jewellery).

Hi Adele,

I think it is probably Honiton - the flowers including the thistle are typical
as are the leaves with raised work. I’ve never seen quite such a regular ground
of picoted bars before but maybe someone was trying to be a bit different! The
bird looked familiar and that’s because there’s a very similar one in a Honiton

Re: [lace] thread for Hollie Point

2016-03-21 Thread Jean Leader
Hi Julie,

It’s a long time since I worked any Hollie Point but I used Madeira Tanne 50
for the best sample I made (I’ll send you a scan privately). In that one I had
about 8 rows and 15 stitches in a 0.25 in square. By comparison a piece of
Hollie Point in the Glasgow Museums Collection had about 10 rows and 22
stitches in a 0.25 in square - more stitches closer together, although I was
getting close. I can’t remember what size needle I used. I do remember that I
could only work that tightly with good light and sometimes needed a magnifying
glass too!

You do need to use short lengths of thread for needle lace - the length of your
forearm is a good guide. Any more than that and the threads will start looking
sad before you get to the end.

When Hollie Point was made I expect linen was used rather than cotton but I’ve
never seen any made with silk. I’ve always found that linen available today
isn’t good for needlelace as it tends to fall apart quickly. Perhaps the
quality was better in the 18th/19th century.

[lace] Lace Guild website Advent Calendar

2015-11-30 Thread Jean Leader
The Lace Guild's website will once again be mounting its Advent Calendar at
http://www.laceguild.org/guild/calendar.html . For those of you not familiar
with this, there is a new lace picture every day, two of the days have links to
patterns, and six of the days are clues for a competition, which anyone can
enter.

Although this works well on tablets as well as on standard computers, 24
windows are something of a squeeze on a smartphone. So there is also a phone
version of the calendar which you can find at
http://www.laceguild.org/phonecal.html .
The smartphone version has the daily lace picture, although if you want the
patterns and wish to enter the competition you will still need to go to the
standard version. To compensate we have added a literary dimension to the phone
version. (You need to tap somewhere other than the doors to get to it.) If you
miss a day (how could you?) you can go back by tapping somewhere else. (Ask a
small child, if you can’t suss out these hidden features.)
As long as you have a recent browser the calendar should work on most phones.

If you have any problems accessing the calendar please let us know.

Susan,

I added the bracelet pattern to the Lace Guild website and have the original

I made it at that size and it didn’t go round my wrist! That’s why I added the

The pricking has been there a while - now I would give a size indication. Must

Susan,
A couple of years ago I was asked to write a section about identifying
hand-made lace in a booklet that was used for a series of workshops for textile
curators organized by Dress and Textiles Specialists (DATS) in partnership with
the VA. As the aim was to help non-specialists to identify hand-made lace I
tried to give an overview of how lace styles changed over time rather than
include lots of photos which could have been rather intimidating.

The booklet is available online at

and also includes useful information about conservation, display and storage of

Liz Pass is quite right - I updated the Lace Guild website last week and added
the new Lace Guild membership bobbins for 2015-16 (the bobbins for 2014-15 are
sold out except for a few Poppy continentals). If you can’t see the new bobbins
you need to refresh your browser (or empty the cache if that doesn’t work).

The new bobbins are lovely smooth wood and while they are more expensive than
last year don’t forget that the price that you see on the website includes
postage.

I also added the 2016 Calendar - Rubies are red… I haven’t seen it yet myself
but hope to be able to add some information about the contents soon.

Next on my list for the Sales Page are the 2015 Christmas bobbins - there will
be a bone and a wooden bobbin for ‘Seven Swans A-swimming” for those of you
collecting the 12 Days of Christmas, and also painted bobbins with a Christmas
wreath in Midlands, Honiton and Continental styles.

The elephant on the Young Lacemakers page
(https://www.laceguild.org/ylm/elephant.html) can be made as a simple outline
for beginners - scroll to the bottom of the page to see this. A good way of
providing something for a young lacemaker beginner is to take a simple outline
and work it with 4 or 5 pairs in cloth stitch - the elephant outline can be
downloaded from the page as a PDF file or the young lacemaker could draw her
own shape.

[lace] Something different on the OIDFA Lace Translator

2015-07-03 Thread Jean Leader
This is David using Jean’s address to announce that another language has just
been added to the Lace Translator on the OIDFA website
(http://www.oidfa.com/translate.html) making 17 in all. This one is Hebrew, and
it’s different for a couple of reasons.

First it’s a right-to-left language, which not only required new coding to
accommodate, but was a real pain manipulating on the computer when mixed with
Roman (left to right) characters like simple parentheses. The second is that
it’s a language which does not have its own words for certain lace terms, and
so a term had to be transliterated or invented. Yael Kaplan, who was
responsible for the translation therefore added short explanations, which I
have inserted below the image.

This latter is something that could be applied to terms in certain other
languages — Japanese comes to mind, but even in European languages there will
be styles that are not common in the region where the language is spoken. So
the moral is that if you think an explanation is required from something
already listed, please contact us, and if you were thinking of offering, say
Chinese, don’t be put off by the absence of some terms in your language.

Oh, and if you happen to speak one of the mainstream lace European languages
that we still lack - Portuguese and Maltese come to mind - do give it a go
(Brazilian-flavoured Portuguese is OK with me).

[lace] Lace Guild website address

2015-06-11 Thread Jean Leader
Since 1999 The Lace Guild website has had the address www.laceguild.org.

When the website was set up in 1997 it was hosted by a company called Demon
Internet which furnished the site with an underlying name of
www.laceguild.demon.co.uk, which is more complicated, tied to a now defunct
company, and the use of which has been discouraged this century. Nevertheless
googling indicates that dozens of sites still have links to this old address.
OMG!

Later this month The Lace Guild website will no longer be hosted by a company
that redirects from www.laceguild.demon.co.uk, so that address will no longer
work.

Please check your links and replace any incorrect ones with the simple and
obvious address that will persist as long as The Lace Guild does, irrespective
of web host:

www.laceguild.org

Or just google for The Lace Guild.

It’s a fascinating film clip. The pattern she’s making is in Geraldine Stott’s

represent the meandering River Ouse at Bedford , with the many waterlilies that
lie on the river there.” It also appears in Pamela Nottingham’s Technique of

In both of them half stitch is used for the ‘spider/waterlily’ while I think
the film shows cloth stitch.

Susan,

Working a twisted picot:
1. Take pin from outside under outer thread of twisted pair, bring point of pin
towards you and out to the side over the thread, place pin (this can be
somewhere in the pillow at a distance from the pattern).
2. Check that the thread to the bobbin is on the underside of the loop round
the pin.
3. Bring other thread of pair below and round the back of the pin to lie beside
other thread. (For left-hand picots this will be clockwise, for right-hand
picots anti-clockwise.)
4. Check that the threads coming away from the pin are one below and one above
the threads going to the pin. (The diagram on kloskant week 45 shows this for a
picot on the right-hand side of the lace.) This is necessary so that when you
tension the twists stay together and end up around the pin.
5. If you’ve placed the pin away from the pricking you can now move it
carefully into its pinhole. (Placing the pin away from the pricking initially
and then moving it into place is a trick I was shown any years ago.)

I suggest trying this to both right and left with a pair wound with thick
thread so you can really see what’s happening.

[lace] Lace Guild website update

2015-05-13 Thread Jean Leader
I've just updated The Lace Guild website with two new lists of second-hand
books. These are books that have been donated to the The Lace Guild but because
the library already has copies, are being sold to raise funds to buy new
books. This time there is a Bargain Basement list with all the books at either
50p or £1!
You'll find them at

There will be more information coming with details of displays and workshops

[lace] Lace Guild website problem

2014-12-20 Thread Jean Leader
There has been an intermittent problem with the Lace Guild website today and
it’s currently down. This is a general problem with the hosting company and we
don’t know when it will be fixed but if you want to see the Advent Calendar we
have already had to move it because traffic temporarily exceeded our allowed
quota.

The Advent Calendar is now at

[lace] Updates to Lace Guild Advent Calendar

2014-12-09 Thread Jean Leader
David has been working hard on the phone version of the Advent Calendar and
it’s now possible to go back in time and look at any days that you might have
missed. `
Just tap on the date.

And today someone pointed out to me that on the competition page there were
only 5 drop-down menus for the 6 grounds featured. That has now been fixed - if
you don’t see all 6 then you need to refresh the page.

[lace] Lace Guild website Advent Calendar

2014-11-30 Thread Jean Leader
The Lace Guild's website will once again be mounting its Advent Calendar at
http://www.laceguild.org/guild/calendar.html

Although this works well on tablets as well as on standard computers, 24
windows are something of a squeeze on a smartphone. So this year we have
prepared a phone version of the calendar which you can find at
http://www.laceguild.org/phonecal.html

This has the daily lace picture, although if you want the patterns and wish to
enter the competition you will still need to go to the standard version. To
compensate we have added a literary dimension to the phone version. (You need
to tap somewhere other than the doors to get to it.) We are afraid that there
is no turning the clock back — you can only see the picture and the literary
quotation for the current day, so if you are interested in this, save a link on
your phone and check it each day.

We have tested the site on all iPhones from 3G to 6+, and on several android
phones and one Windows phone. As long as you have a recent browser the calendar
should work. (We had trouble on an HTC phone until we downloaded a Chrome
browser.)

If you have any problems accessing the calendar please let us know.

[lace] Lace translations

2014-08-28 Thread Jean Leader
Dear all,

Some of you will be aware of the OIDFA Translator which my husband, David, has
been developing. This focusses on about 40 (currently) core lacemaking terms
(primarily bobbin lace) and attempts to solicit the vocabulary from native
speakers of different languages. Currently 15 languages are represented,
although with varying degrees of completeness. The URL is
http://www.oidfa.com/translate.html .

David has asked me to post the following about the latest update, which is
Russian. Now we appreciate that the members on this list are mainly from the
US, Great Britain, and other English-speaking countries, but - especially in
the US - there are always members for whom English is not their mother tongue.

Russian is a particular problem in that there is a continuing tradition of
lacemaking there, but few Russian lacemakers speak English. A set of Russian
terms would therefore be particularly useful, but correspondingly difficult to
obtain. The translations I have so far are via a French intermediary! I have
tried to use pictures to clarify terms for non-English or non-French speakers
(the two languages of OIDFA), but sometimes it is difficult to select a picture
that is unequivocal. There is also the problem that different types of lace
techniques have different vocabularies, and that different languages may
express things in different ways and lack nouns used in other languages.

So I suspect that there are some problems with a few of the Russian terms, and
I wonder if there are any native speakers on this list who are able to help
out. These are the problems:

1. In English there is a general name to refer to things like half-stich, cloth
stitch, cloth-stich-and-twist, namely 'stitch'. Although Google translate
suggests several words for stitch, it is not clear which, if any correspond to
this idea. Unfortunately the image I have is of a particular stitch which
confused the Russian translator (suggestions for something better appreciated).
My question then is whether such a word exists in Russian. For example, how
would one translate the following sentence?

Which stitch do I use next, cloth stitch or half stitch?
Is there a general term for the stitch which is the second word in the
sentence, or would this be translated in Russian without a noun? e.g. as in:
What do I do next, a cloth stich or a half stitch?

2. Nouns for the concepts of 'head-side' and 'foot-side' may or may not exist
in different languages. I am suspicious that the translator has tried to
translate the components of the English terms, rather than the concepts they
are used for.

3. Likewise for passive v. weaver/worker.

Let me emphasise that I am most grateful to the translators for providing
translations for the grunge work of providing the bulk of terms, but that
nobody is perfect and the essence of mounting this on the web is that
corrections can be made and continue to be made at no publishing cost.

If I waited until the work was perfect I'd wait forever. But if anyone can help
improve it in the meantime I'd really appreciate it.

David

P.S. The Slovenian is still in progress and I am sure will be complete by the
next OIDFA Congress. The Greek, Polish and Finnish have only been checked by a
couple of people, so any further scrutiny would be especially welcome. Other
languages, too, but mainstream European languages are perhaps not the priority.

[lace] Carrickmacross net and organdie

2014-05-27 Thread Jean Leader
Does anyone based in the UK have some spare cotton net and organdie suitable
for Carrickmacross?

Earlier this year I made some Carrickmacross lace for Amy, a student at Glasgow
School of Art, to have as part of her degree presentation in June. As you may
have seen on the news there was a terrible fire in the School of Art's
Mackintosh building last Friday and Amy along with some other students has lost
all her degree show work in the fire. She won't know anything definite about
what's going to happen next until Friday but it looks as if some sort of end of
year show will go ahead as planned on 13th June so she's trying to work out
what might be possible. She's asked me if it would be possible to re-make the
lace but I don't have enough net and organdie left and Jo Firth who we got it
from, is on holiday until 10th June. None of the other lace suppliers seem to
stock it so I thought I'd see if anyone had some lying in a cupboard.

If you do have any suitable net or organdie please contact me off list.
Thank you
Jean in Glasgow

Bill Blake was an ex-miner who learnt to make Honiton lace with Elsie Luxton
after he retired. Back in the 1990s he was teaching Honiton lace in Kirkcaldy,
Scotland. Somewhere I have a photo of him at his lace pillow. Sadly he is no
longer with us and I wonder if whoever is selling his lace realises how much
work was involved.
