Reading Challenges

Through the generosity of the Friends of the Lincoln Library,
the library is now able to offer online reading challenges via Beanstack, a
free-to-you online service which offers book and activity logging,
recommendations, reviews, and more! Our current challenge will run
throughout the month of March.



The Lincoln Library Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Challenge

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated each year
from May 1–31. Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander voices through
reading. Log your reading and activities here to earn badges all month
long. Choose a book from our list of recommendations or pick your own! To
complete the challenge, earn one badge in addition to the registration
badge. Anyone who earns at least one badge in addition to the registration
badge will be entered in our prize drawing!

Author Carey Kish traveled over 300 miles on foot and tasted more than 230
different beers to bring readers this great selection of hikes and brews.
Join him for a talk about his new guidebook, Beer Hiking in New England,
which showcases a wide variety of fun beer hikes in Maine, New Hampshire,
Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, from easy walks to
moderate ramble and strenuous climbs. Carey will talk about the stunning
scenery that awaits you and the breweries and brewpubs nearby that’ll
quench your thirst at the end of your hike. He also has a few interesting
tales to tell about the beer hiking journey.



Carey Kish is a seasoned hiker, outdoors writer, beer enthusiast and
longtime New England denizen. Kish has hiked the 2,190-mile Appalachian
Trail from Georgia to Maine (twice), the 1,100-mile Florida Trail and the
2,654-mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. Beer Hiking New
England is a product of Kish’s lifelong passion for hiking and his love for
tasty craft-brewed beer. He is also editor of the AMC Maine Mountain Guide
and author of AMC’s Best Day Hikes Along the Maine Coast. You can find him

We are so excited to welcome food writer, Nicole Taylor, for a discussion
about her new cookbook, "Watermelon and Red Birds: A Cookbook for
Juneteenth and Black Celebrations."

We'll talk about the history of Juneteenth and ways in which the holiday
has evolved over time. Nicole will share some of her favorite recipes to
honor the Juneteenth holiday and Black celebrations year round. The
conversation will be moderated by Kelly Suber.


Nicole A. Taylor is a James Beard Award–nominated food writer, master home
cook, and producer. She has written for the New York Times, Bon Appétit,
and Food & Wine. Nicole is the author of The Up South Cookbook and The Last
O.G. Cookbook. She is the executive producer of If We So Choose, a short
documentary about the desegregation of an iconic southern fast food joint.
Nicole is the cofounder of The Maroon, a marketplace and retreat house
focused on radical rest for Black creatives. She lives in New York City and
Athens, Georgia, with her husband and son.

George Tooker often depicted the tensions of modern life and inhuman
bureaucracies. As a gay man, active in the Civil Rights movement, Tooker
explored boundary-breaking subjects in his work while also conjuring
powerful scenes of quiet beauty. This program provides an introduction to
the artist, his life and his remarkable body of work.

About the presenter:

Jane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences
throughout New England. Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston
University and a Master’s in Education from Harvard University. Born and
raised in NH, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural
institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she
served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held
the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for
more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. For
