It was often glossed over with stories of the poor destitute south, carpetbaggers and loss of states' rights. Professor Gates and other historians, including Heather Coxe Richardson, show us Reconstruction as an opportunity to live up to our nation's ideals and a truer Democracy. In this documentary, we will learn about the · origins of the “lost cause," · meaning of "40 acres and a mule", · reconstruction ideals of Thaddeus Stephens and the opposing ones of Andrew Johnson, and the · final Betrayal" of 1876 with Rutherford Hayes' closed room deal that ended reconstruction. The documentary is beautifully composed with many wonderful photographs and excellent commentary. Please join us.
