because I
spent the entire day today doing just that. Nothing I do has
succeeded in recognizing my Intel EtherExpress PRO card. I even
managed to crash my machine a couple of times using modprobe to try
to manually load the kernel module.

9.0 happens to be sensitive.

Hi,
I'm replying to my own post to say that it turned out to be the ISP's problem.
Moving from a dynamic to a permanent IP address required no changes at all on
my box.
