Have you tried it from your normal user account, rather than root?
Just select Synaptic from the {references menu, and use your normal
*user* password, not the root password. The first user created during
install has privileges to use the sudo/gksudo commands, and the

About Chromium, I have just taken a look in their own bug page, someone

I checked, it uses gksudo: gksu --description
/usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop /usr/sbin/synaptic

Check the item in menu, make sure it is being ran in the gksudo way.

I don't think there's something wrong with this command, I compare with the
command in Lubuntu 10.04, they are the same.
