Hi Nicola, You probably got the highlightbroken preference changed somehow. When set to 0, it shows red links with a question mark. It was not very useful, so support for it was removed in MediaWiki 1.20 if I'm not mistaken. If you have an older version, you need to get it set to 1 by default.
