The local dealership did a 150K service on my E250 Bluetec sedan, and noted
that the radiator was leaking and needed replacing. When I picked up the
car there was a low coolant message so I drove to my trusty indy tech (ex
dealer). The coolant was a quart down but he saw no leak. The car sat on

I know. Part of the issue is that the art of plumbing is dying. No skill
involved in pulling a trigger on a crimping machine. Now they need that
expensive Milwaukee tool when they could just use a cheap propane torch and
some solder. Everything has to be over complicated now, including cars. On

not. I should study up on that as this is the engine in the S550

One of the drawbacks of owning older cars... but normally I have enough
redundancy in the fleet to tolerate downtime on one or even two cars.
Today I'm dealing with the intermittent start on the E500, a non-charging
(probably bad alternator) on the Frontier, and the normally always-reliable

the color is “Pueblo”. She claims it is a legit Mercedes color but Mercedes
will not release the numbers of how many were painted this color.
Is this accurate? She’s very adamant.

Yes, sometimes it starts normally, sometimes the starter turns maybe one
cylinder stroke then stops, sometimes starter acts totally dead.
Any harm in turning the ignition “on” then using a jumper on the relay socket,
just to rule out the relay?

Camshaft sensor or camshaft magnet solenoid? If it's the sensor it's a pig to
get to, I believe.

Was it hot or warm when the no-start occurred?
I ask, because the crankshaft position sensor can cause this when it's failing
and often when hot. Let it cool off, works without an issue.
I keep a CPS for all of my cars on the shelf, as it's a common failure item and
pretty inexpensive (Bosch

I would rig a test light to the starter, and then PROVE which it

Tinkered with this a bit this morning. Pulled the starter relay and checked it.
Seems OK, put 12V across the terminals and it clicks. Of course that doesn't
mean it works reliably every time or under load
Put it back in and tried to start, started right up.
For an intermittent no-crank
That looks really nice. Take 32 Bens and pull that wad out and flash it. Guy

According to oldest son, while some old school plumbers still like sweating
copper, these are very popular in the trade. He says they're quite substantial
and he's never seen one leak unless it was improperly installed.

I can see the advantages of those, but seems somewhat like a "sharkbite" in
that it relies on an O-ring to make the seal, which will eventually start to
leak years later. But I've had sweated copper joints eventually leak also, so I
don't think anything is really permanent when it comes to
Blowtorches like that Turner are what plumbers used to solder fittings, before
bottled propane was widely available. My dad always called them a plumbers
blowtorch; his father was a plumber (among other crafts) and had several.

To clarify, they’re referred to as “copper press” fittings, I’m told. Not
cheap, nor are the crimping tools (+$2k) but they work well, are quick and easy
to use, and avoid having to use a torch in places with flammable materials as
well as are great in tight spaces.
Actually, a lot of plumbers no longer sweat solder copper. They use the crimp
system that Milwaukee and others promote. It’s pretty slick stuff.
