Growing up in Riyadh there were a million 504 diesels from Syria and Turkey
that would come down yearly for the Haj. Definitely a preferred vehicle,
which is really all the endorsement a car needs in retrospect. They would
load them like crazy. A wagon is always attractive but then you give up the
The 240 diesel was a dog. A buddy even turboed one and it still wouldnt get
out of its own way. 6 cylinders I think. Maybe 85hp.
I had a 240 wagon gasser before my 85 td. Honestly it was a better car in
many ways. Primarily because it was simpler and a 5 speed. Less maintenance
for sure. I put an
Growing up in Athens during the seventies and eighties, I saw a lot of Peugeot
diesel taxis, along with W115, W123 and W124 Mercedes as well as Toyota Corona,
VW Jetta, Opel Kadet etc.

I wonder how many Peugeot diesels were ruined with waste oil conversions and
hood stacks?

I had a neighbor years ago (late 1980’s) in SoCal who had a fleet of Peugeot
504 Diesels. He started with a 1979, then he acquired a 1978 and finally a 1976
station wagon manny tranny. They were very comfortable and reliable. I wasn’t
into Diesels at the time or I would have tried to talk him
The only French cars I ever saw in the midwest were the 1980s-era Renault-based
Alliance and Encore that were made by AMC but sold as Renaults. While these
cars got some good reviews at the time, they were underpowered and didn't sell
well. I remember them as market failures.
Seeing a Peugeot
Much like the Volvo 240s, they did. Lots of them.

Folks,
I noticed the discussions on Peugeots. We drive 2 of the 300td and 2
Peugeot 505 sw8 cars (gas ZDJL engines.) I've mostly driven peugeots
since 1985 and about 6 years ago i started running some Mercedes
diesels mostly on WVO. In my opinion a 505 peugeot is a much lighter
feeling
