load Embperl at server startup time!
Yes I do, but I was following along with the guide and loaded everything at
startup. The embperl faq didn't give any reasons (that I can find) as to
why I shouldn't or too many
Does this option redirect stdout for every connection or (hopefully) just
ones that are tied to the embperl handler?

so, i read all this stuff about using shared memory, preloading stuff to
each child doesn't have it's own copy. so i went ahead and compile sysV
shared memory into my kernel. however, ipcs tells me that nothing is
using shared memory:
server# ipcs -m
Shared Memory:
T ID KEY
