Yes, it works fine with DNS names. However, if you are polling something
with a dynamic IP address then when the server MRTG runs on, the DNS server,
MRTG itself in daemon mode, etc.. caches the domain name of the device you
are bound to run into problems.

Agreed. Chances are MRTG in daemon mode will not refresh the IP address.
Sort of
Your resolver will cache the IP address when MRTG starts in daemon mode. You
would need to stop and start it to make the DNS change effective or switch
to cron like you said.
