Log in as the user you intend to set up for them. Issue the following:
show grants;
select @@sql_mode;

Side note: I would upgrade. 5.0.45 has some pretty serious

http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php on the server, the best
tool to manage a mysql server.
Or use XAMPP, a complete package from
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html
