I hear you and almost there myself. In the Gates world I use Outlook Express. In mandrake 7.1 I am learning to use kmail. I do miss however the ability to enter part of a word in the adress to: box then Ctrl-K to find the possible addresses that contain that word. Is there a way to do this

This seems to be a common problem; I have experienced it myself. I think it may be a problem with certain BIOSes not reporting memory correctly to the OS, but that's just a guess. Anyway, one way of fixing it with Grub which I use is to edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst In the file you will see

To kill a process, you need to own the process. In some cases only the root can kill processes. What specifically did you have in mind though? I use the text version to do this...kill XXX (number of the PID). this is very effective and removes most cases of child threads. Let us know more
