That odd IRQ could indeed explain alot of your problems in attempting to communicate with your modem. Linux defaults the serial port IRQs to the "typical" IRQ for that port (ie, IRQs 3 and 4). You need to explicitly tell Linux that your serial port is at another IRQ by using: setserial

The easiest way to tell is if there is DOS support for the internal modem, ie: will work in DOS to dial out. The next easiest is to open the case...and look at it...if the modem has jumpers for IRQ/COM then it will work with Linux. If the modem card is tiny, half size...it is most likely a

Wade Out of curiosity I went to the Creative sight to check out the specs. on there modems. Their external modem is the only one they list as being usable under DOS all their internal modems require Win98 or 95. If a modem will work in DOS it can be configured to work in Linex, if it will not

I think the problem lies in the wording... the correct designation is Serial Communications Port(s), or Serial1, or commonly COM1. And a printer as a Parallel Port Also don't be confused with a Modem on Com3/4/5 etcthe motherboard supports many Com ports but the BIOS only specifies Serial
