That odd IRQ could indeed explain alot of your problems in attempting to
communicate with your modem. Linux defaults the serial port IRQs to the
"typical" IRQ for that port (ie, IRQs 3 and 4). You need to explicitly
tell Linux that your serial port is at another IRQ by using:
setserial
I was told by an 'expert' that if the irq4 then the modem was a
winmodem (as a rule of thumb)

The easiest way to tell is if there is DOS support for the internal modem, ie:
will work in DOS to dial out.
The next easiest is to open the case...and look at it...if the modem has
jumpers for IRQ/COM then it will work with Linux. If the modem card is tiny,
half size...it is most likely a

Well that's one I haven't heard (no doubt among many), but I'm using
com1 irq4 and Linux to write this. The best way I've heard to tell
(although this could be wrong too)
Hi Alan,
When I go into my BIOS I didn't seem to locate any com ports. I was able to
find
'Onboard Serial Ports 1 and 2'
'Onboard Parallel Port'
'Onboard Parallel Port Mode' Normal
Currently I have also been advised that it may be good if I change my
linuxconf to ttyS3 and have also

Hi Charles,
I read all of that and thank you for sending it, what I found was what I
think may be a little unusual?
When I did
cat /proc/pci
as root I got the following;
Bus 0, device 9, function 0:

Out of curiosity I went to the Creative sight to check out the specs. on
there modems. Their external modem is the only one they list as being usable
under DOS all their internal modems require Win98 or 95. If a modem will
work in DOS it can be configured to work in Linex, if it will not
I think the problem lies in the wording... the correct designation is Serial
Communications Port(s), or Serial1, or commonly COM1. And a printer as a
Parallel Port
Also don't be confused with a Modem on Com3/4/5 etcthe motherboard
supports many Com ports but the BIOS only specifies Serial

Hi Charles
Wadewhen you decided that your modem was on com2 and
therefore changed the configuration to ttys1, did you disable
the motherboard com2 in the system bios?

Hi Alan,
I sure didn't, I take it I should have though. :)
What happened was during install I assigned the incorrect com port, I
assigned com3, when
it should have been com 2. Thats what I get for talking to someone while
doing an installation, huh.
Do you think it would be easier if I started
