Try re-installing your modem. It works for me.

Hi all,
I upgraded the kernel from the rpm files as stated in the security
alert. I did the iptables and lm-utils with the rpm package manager. I
used the instructions that came with the security alert.
rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.7-12.3mdk.i586.rpm etc.
Rebooted with no problems.

I feel sure you are aware of this, but; the PNP in the BIOS should be set
to OFF. I changed my setting and my MODEM took off like, well it works now.
