configured again tried to install Star Office when Word Perfect was already
in place, and it still corrupts Xwindows to the extent that I have to reload

I would hate to tell you this but I have installed and still use WP and SO
together on the same machine, same Linux distro without a problem. I
would suggest it may be a problem with your graphics card perhaps.

After 6 full installs, I now know what was corrupting my X. It was not
desktop configuration, hdparm, video setup (as generics), or any of the other
RPMs I loaded from Mandrake 7 Deluxe, (modem sound not configured) --Star
Office so corrupted X that it froze Linux during boot, while
