(This is part of the problem with the Fink and MacPorts packages - writing a generic startup script for a wide variety of OS X versions and NUT configurations is hard.) Also, the ACL/ACCEPT/REJECT part of that guide is out-of-date (it refers to a much earlier version of NUT). As much as I would like to enlist your help in making NUT easier to use on OS X, I am wondering if you have an APC UPS, and if you might be better served by apcupsd: http://www.apcupsd.org (It has a Mac GUI monitor, and a DMG-based installer.)
