GL: My 59 Shop Manual supplement shows a change from a wick seal to a
neoprene seal for the 283's. Doesn't show a change in the 261 but who
knows. I have a 59 261 but haven't had the cap off.

Good luck with it Gary.
Look carefully on that seal and see if you can find a part number. I already
have two diff part numbers of two piece neoprene rear seals that apparently
fit the stovebolts. I haven't had a chance yet to try one or even just get
one and look at it. I also have the part

When I rebuilt my 235
Modern seals are readily available for the rear main so it is not a 261
thing. It is possible however, that someone has machined the rear main.
I machined at the back end of my 261 to accept a different rear main
seal to compensate for other modifications I made to the engine when I
build it up.
Anyone have one they want to sell me? In a perfect world it would be
rebuilt but I will take anything at this point.

The neoprene seal makes me wonder if it's a late production

Keep us posted .

What carb do you want? I have a whole box of old chevy carbs but I really
don't have clue what is correct for your application. Jim

You can't find one? Not Chevy duty or any place like that? Are you just
looking for a core? I bought one from Oreilly not too long ago. It does
alright. I just found some carbs in a box I'd forgotten about. Looks like a
couple of Carter W1's and a parts rochester. I got four Carter YF's

Matt, I think ebay is your best bet, especially if you are not in a big rush.
there are some Rochester 235 carbs for auction on there right now. look at
items #4639686930, and 8065066975, and 8064462052. the last one has several
carbs for sale. I rebuilt my single barrel Rochester on my
The trick here , is to begin with a good core , the # 1 thing is
loose throttle shafts , this is a tricky and time consuming thing to
repair so few rebuilders bother .
Carter makes _excellent_ rebuilds (of Rochester B series), each one
has a re-bushed throttle shaft .

Well, the stamped number by the Dizzy didn't make the usaual sense, made me
think it was a rebuilders block. Think they were still making in 64??

I finally got my pump all sorted out and bought a good one but i need to
find a way to mount it (79 Chevy PS pump to a 235) so i went to the scrap
yard today to look for a PS pump bracket in hopes of modifying one from a
different engine to fit our straight six's but unfortunately every bracket i
