Modern seals are readily available for the rear main so it is not a 261 thing. It is possible however, that someone has machined the rear main. I machined at the back end of my 261 to accept a different rear main seal to compensate for other modifications I made to the engine when I build it up.

The trick here , is to begin with a good core , the # 1 thing is loose throttle shafts , this is a tricky and time consuming thing to repair so few rebuilders bother . Carter makes _excellent_ rebuilds (of Rochester B series), each one has a re-bushed throttle shaft . Chevy Duty and
