When Spun Really Fast, CDs Explode
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/22/0311248

Anonymous Coward writes: "Ever wonder why cd-rom/cd-rw drives are not
getting any faster? Wonder why they heat up? [0]This page has a rather
amusing experiment where they put various CD's into something that can
spin up to 30,000RPM and found that most cd's explode at just around
28,000RPM. Oh and they seem to like using Corel CD-ROM discs for their
    experiment."

Sangui5 writes: "It seems as if the [0]JPEG Committee has noticed the
recent [1]patent fuss, and is working on the prior art angle. Good to
know that even though there's a [2]new standard, the committee is
    standing by their previous work."

WorldCom to File for Chapter 11 Protection
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/2349242

[0]Mantour writes: "To everyone's big suprise ;), Worldcom is going for
Chapter 11. 'The Chapter 11 filing by WorldCom would follow once
high-flying companies like energy trader Enron Corp. and Global
Crossing Ltd., which crumbled into bankruptcy amid a crush of
accounting investigations by federal regulators.' [1]You can get more

Research: File Traders And Music Purchasing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/2037237

An anonymous reader writes: "Like a TV preacher taking excerpts from
the Bible to support a contrary thought, the results of research can be
similarly interpreted in opposite ways. Edison Research just released a
[0]pro-record industry report stating '10.1% of 12-17s are actively
downloading/not purchasing music.' Richard Menta over at MP3 Newswire
[1]noted that this also means 90% of file traders are buying music, a
positive result that supports the virtues of trading. Menta then goes
through the study's findings one-by-one, questioning Edison Research's
conclusions. This includes their recommendation to the industry to
    fight the 'downloading problem.'"

Super-small Voice-controlled Wireless Phone
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/1838231

[0]Noah Bergevin writes: "While web browsing one day, I ran across a
little gadget at a favorite e-tailer of mine, and fell in love with it
at first sight. It's a super-small cordless telephone that you hang on
your ear, and which uses voice-recognition instead of a physical keypad
to do the dialing. It's from a company called [1]ArialPhone. They have
only been around since January 2001, and the phone has been out for
about a year." Read on to see what's good and not-as-good about this
phone with the rest of Noah's review.

A New Free Software Donation Directory
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/1813204

    [0]Wolfgang Spraul writes: "[1]CoSource and [2]SourceXchange are
closed. They became part of the [3]history of Open Source Software
Markets. However, I still need a place where I can find maintainers or
core developers of existing Free Software packages that accept my
feature request and payment, implement the feature within a reasonable
timeframe and give me support if it doesn't work in my environment.
Since no such place is in sight, I launched the [4]Free Software
Donation Directory as a first step. What do you think? How should the
next Free Software market look like? Should there be one at all?" Right
now, he's got around 20 projects listed, if you care to invest in some
    Free software.

Randomizing Survey Answers For Accuracy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/1618249

[0]Saint Aardvark writes: "The New York Times reports that [1]two
[2]researchers at IBM have come up with a way to persuade people to
give [3]correct answers to survey questions: randomize the results.
Strangely enough, they can get accurate information out of the
aggregate of enough answers -- but it's completely anonymized. Since
conservative estimates say nearly half of all survey answers are bogus,
there's an interest in persuading people to be more truthful. As ever,
you can use the [4]Random NY Times Registration Generator to falsify
your registration details and read the article..."

ACLU Study Wary of Broadband Providers
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/142230

An anonymous reader says "The ACLU recently had a study done that
suggests that [0]broadband access is a threat to internet freedom.
Their study focuses on the control available to broadband providers who
don't have to deal with the same level of competition or regulation as
ISP providers. The result is the ability to radically control internet
access combined with the omnipresent corporate incentive for profit,
whatever the cost to free speech."

Turbolinux Not Dead Yet
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/21/140206

[0]Abdul Nabi writes "I found this article on Linux Today which is a
[1]response from Turbolinux to the recent rumors of a shutdown. The
responds contends that they are restructuring rather than shutting
down." Ya know, I can't think of a single person that I know that runs
Turbolinux. Maybe that has something to do with their problems.
